First solo show! Scott Derby: Illustrations, August 6th at Primer Gallery

Hello all,
It has been a while since I've posted here, but I wanted to let everyone know that I will be having my first solo show of work on Friday, August 6th, 6-9 pm, at the Primer Microgallery in Hatboro, PA as part of Hatboro's "First Friday" event. It will be a collection of both older and newer work, originals and prints, most of which will be available for sale.

It's a great location, and I am honored to have been invited to show my work at this small, but very hip, design firm/microgallery.
Food and drink will be served, so if you're in the area, come on out and say hello.

For more details, check out Primer at http://Primer.com

The above piece, done specifically for this show, is basically a self-portrait, circa 1986 or '87, illustrating how music, primarily the punk genre, blew my mind and changed my life... I wanted to show some of my favorite bands and some of the albums that I first discovered when this amazing music form reached out from behind shitty commercial radio and arena rock to grab me by the nut sack. I guess I can call this "Portrait of the artist as a young punk"...

Hope you like.
thanks Chogrin =)

tripleG: gremlins.

whew!
the second part of the trio for the GGG show:

of course, stripe is most recognizable as a nasty gremlin and not his mogwai form.
but i think the scene where the new mogwai are playing and baby stripe leans over to give an extremely evil look to gizmo that billy misses... that's the moment where you just KNOW he's bad news...

Digital exercises/studies

Hey guys, just wanted to share this environment digital study I did last night along with a few weapon studies that i've been doing to get some practice with working in photoshop. For the environment study, I grabbed a random piece from Blizzard's concept art gallery and did my best to copy it without grabbing colors or just tracing from the original. It's a great learning tool doing things freehand like that and I feel I really got a lot out of it. Expect to see more of these in the future as well as original ones from me. I'm new to digital painting so these being my first attempts have been a lot of fun.

My copy is the top image, the original is on the bottom, I believe it's done by Peter Lee, but I might be mistaken since there's no signature.

"THE MONSTERS I KNOW"

I'm currently getting ready for an installation and exhibition titled

From Silhouettes

Been taking lots of classes lately. A recent concept art class for gaming at Seattle Central Community College had students building up characters from silhouettes; two of my studies, not too different than my usual children's book stuff:

John

MINESPIRE

I was recently approached by a great new start up company named Minespire. They are a shared profit business, making a positive difference with every product sold. Through this, human rights, animal rights and environmental organizations are able to get closer to their goals.

Minespire is working with different artists to develop shirt designs that tell a story about a cause. Each artist will have a page where you can read about them and the work that they do. I was asked to create a t-shirt design to support environmental causes. Although environmental issues have been going on for a long time, the BP spill is fresh in everyone's mind. I came up with several concepts for this and the Angry Octopus was born.

The official Minespire launch is set for this fall, and the website and store is a work in progress. But please check out their site and follow their Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube pages. Spread the word and help a great cause!

Gremlins - Light Bright, Light Bright!

Next piece in line for the Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Goonies show that'll be in LA next month. Here's my submission for Gremlins.

I re-watched this recently with the Boyfriend for reference. I could have picked so many different scenes, but I found myself laughing hysterically when Billy is running after 'Stripe' into the YMCA (right before the gremlin cannonballs into the pool). I found so much delight in this scene because he has his house's sword strapped to his backpack when he runs up to the building. I don't know why, but a backpack filled with an electronic-puppet/Mogwai, and a sword strapped to it just seems far too entertaining... Enjoy!

Dirty issue 1

Wanted to share some new work I did for the first issue of "Dirty" magazine, curated by Pat Aulisio in conjunction with Pterodactyl Philadelphia. Anyways, I got to do the artwork for the cover and few of the interior pages. The cover is first, then the second image is entitled "Midnight in the Garden" and the third image is entitled "Family."

You can check the whole issue out online here:

Japanese Pop Culture Show, Piece #1

This is my first piece for the Japanese pop culture show. If you want some more info, just go here where I explain the tanooki suit's origins in Japanese folklore and how KFC is huge in Japan.

Prayer to Mothra

"If we were to call for help, over time, over sea, like a wave, you'd come"
8"X10"
acrylic on panel

This picture features Mothra (or Mosura) in her larval stage headed toward Tokyo Bay to answer a distress call by the Shobijin (small fairy twins who can communicate with Mothra telepathically). The title of the painting is part of Mothra's prayer or song the Twins sing to contact Mothra. Mothra often aids as an ally to Godzilla but more often an enemy and worthy adversary to the "King of Monsters"

I had a tons of fun painting this, more then I thought I would, something about a giant worm crashing through the waves to cause destruction I guess. But I really had more fun hanging out watching Godzilla movies for research, Hope fully soon I would like to a King Ghidorah piece!!

August Show: TURNING JAPANESE

Poster Art by Dave Perillo

Come and celebrate the Autumn Society's tribute to Japanese Pop Culture, with "TURNING JAPANESE: The Rise of Supermen, Robots, and Monsters. Starting First Friday, August 6th, from 6pm to 9pm. Only at Brave New Worlds Comics. See you there!

Kultur

This is a munny collage that I have been working on for the last week. I got the idea for this project from class, his name is Kultur which means culture in German.

Comic-Con Exclusives G.I. Joe Figures

Late last year I got the chance to do more paintings for Hasbro. This time it was for the Comic-Con Exclusives G.I. Joe Figures.

And I was way too excited to see them pimping these toys last week on G4. So also check out Hasbro's Comic-Con Exclusives on G4's Attack of the Show

Goonies

Hey again folks... trying to pump these out while I have a bit of time, so here is my Goonies piece. Not a big fun concept on this one, I just went with something that was fun to draw. I had a fun idea but when you see the Gremlins piece you'll see why I decided against it, I can't have all three pieces taking place in a completely destroyed room.... thats just overkill. Take it easy

Pikachu!

here's my piece for the turning japanese art show. my favorite little electric type pokemon! i painted it with watercolor.
