E-Mail BLAST

In honor of my very first e-mail update for my website (plaidbrad.com) I created the above image "E-Mail Blast." I didn't really plan this out too much, and I am wondering what people think of it. Not quite sure if the digital envelope really makes sense here. Anyways, it was fun to try and do something a little chaotic/crazy.

you can sign up for e-mail updates on my site by clicking here if interested.

Thanks,
Brad

Illustration Course

Hey all, just got some news recently and I wanted to share it with you guys. As some of you may or may not know, for the past year, I've been in the works of setting up my own illustration course at Burlington County College. Had to go through tons of red tape and paperwork for things to get pushed forward, but things have finally been approved and the course will begin next semester, starting in January. It's an intro class and I based my syllabus off of many of the courses I (and many of you) had taken at UArts, so I know it'll be a lot of fun. I'm a bit nervous, but very excited to see how things go. A special thanks to Patrick Auletto for his input and advice, I'm sure his experience will be of great help to me!

Also, since we missed the official catalog deadline, I've been making class visits to many of the different art classes offered at the school to promote the course. So far I've got 5 official sign ups and need 5 more to ensure the course runs this Spring. Anyway, hope everyone is doing well and glad to see art things have been picking up momentum for many of us!

Joe Game

Thank You

For all the dedicated selfless hours you put into this collective, and including me into this special group of people almost 2 years ago.

I'll be thinking of you when I listen to the song "California Love".

ASOP Wallpapers

Hey guys. I loved the ASOP logo that Sam did and had some fun making wallpapers (just goofing off). Anyway, I thought I would share them in the off chance that anyone took a liking to them. Enjoy!

It's Been a While

Lots of things going on this summer, fall, and eventually falling into winter. (Though it doesn't feel like it.) I was stuck in some horrific art block, and I didn't draw literally for months. The other day I had such an urge to draw I picked up my tablet and just started doodling, trying out some new coloring techniques, styles, and just having fun, something I haven't done with art since the beginning of senior year.

I miss other artists, and art in general. Here's hoping I'll be more present in the upcoming months. Hope you all have been well.

And to Joe Game, thank you so much for everything! For all the opportunities, shows, and fun times. I hope we'll do margaritas again some time in the future. So much love and luck to your in California! I love Adventure Time!!!!!

A LONG OVERDUE THANK YOU

Friends and fellow artists of the Autumn Society; As you may or may not know, Joseph 'Chogrin' Game will be leaving the Philadelphia area in the next few days to work on a pilot at Cartoon Network out California way. No, he's not leaving the group, but I feel this is the perfect time to say thank you. Every show we've enjoyed hanging, all the exposure we've gained from these shows, all of the great promotional materials be it posters, handbills, pins, and t-shirts, all the press coverage, and all the shows to be hung and viewed in the coming year, are all the fruits of Joe's selfless hard work, cunning, and charity. Almost every aspect of the planning and production that went into what the Autumn Society is now was Joe's undertaking.

Joe, THANK YOU so very much for the oppertunitys, hard work, and fun you so graciously extended to every person who approached you with a pen in hand. THANK YOU for the work you will no doubt do in the future to further ASOPs name. THANK YOU for donating your time, and paying out of your own wallet to get us where we are. I wish you the best of luck with Cartoon Network.

The theme for this piece was the word "skinny"
it was my first piece in a while and just wanted to
get a piece done. Its simple and colorful. Poor

original contact me. 10.5 x 14 ( original) Watercolor

After much trial and error it's done! Finding the correct medium to keep the damn paint on this thing was a challenge in itself! But here it is! Done and I'm pretty proud about it

Grief Through Times of Strife

Grief Through Times of Strife, 21x16", Colored pencil/digital

Hey everybody. A little while ago I posted a piece in a promotional series dealing with common themes in editorial art- this is the newest addition. The piece is about those times when the world outside you is as tumultuous as your internal distress. Bad timing, right? I'm happy with how it turned out, though to a certain extent I wish I had experimented with some new processes during the piece- just to maybe get some new effects in there. Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks guys.

PCS Presents: Creature "Double Feature"

For the month of November, The Philadelphia Cartoonist Society presents an amazing show full of tentacles, yellow eyes, sharp teeth, and slimy skin. So, come and see the Creature "Double Feature" show, only at Brave New Worlds Comics.

Cosby Show

Just finished up this piece for the Cosby show this weekend, and boy am I excited about it. One color screenprint, about 8x10", printed with chocolate pudding. Straight up chocolate pudding. Turns out pudding has a nice elegant color to it, and I'm sure this print is also a scratch-and-sniff to boot. Happened to be a bit lighter than I expected, so I'm glad I didn't go for butterscotch.

The original Monsters of Rock....

Hey all,
Just finished up this piece in time for the Creature Double Feature show taking place at the Brave New Worlds Comic shop in Olde City Philly on N. 2nd street between Market and Arch. There'll be a lot of great work, so stop in and check it out if you've got a chance...

Custom Yoka for D-Con

Here's my finished YOKA custom for Designer Con. He needs a name, any ideas? The coloring pattern was based on my gf's Boston Terrier. I am extremely humbled to be a part of this show, from what i hear there will be 300 artists involved. Thanks to DKE Toys and Dylan Evans for giving me this opportunity.

The Cosby Show

This Saturday from 6 till 10 we'll be rocking it big Cosby style @ cafe Mocha. The show is base around the legend of Bill Cosby. From sweaters, pudding, jello, fat albert, and ghost dad if you have a piece that you think would fit in send me an email at nose@nosego.com. Other than that come out and go hard for your city. Oh yeah we're doing an ugly sweater contest, prize will announced later.

Naked City Illustrations.

To my pleasure, a rumor that has been circling for quite some time, has recently materialized. I now have a weekly illustration section in the paper's Naked City section. Every week around Thursday, all I receive is a word or a subject heading, and I am allowed to create what I want from that. I have decided that these illustrations should be more an exercise: Fast, loose, and varied. The writer seems to appreciate the collage style more, but its out of his hands. That is, unless he completely hates it. We all answer to someone eventually, I guess. These are the four I have done so far.

Please check my site for much more crap.

Thor + Odin + Loki

Hello everybody!

Here is a triptych with the Norse Gods: Thor, Odin and Loki. I always wanted to draw those three...

Thor, the god of thunder. There are many possibilities to depict Thor but it was important to include his three most important possessions: Jarngreipr (the Iron Gloves), Megingjord (the Power-Belt) and - of course! - the mighty hammer Mjollnir. Here, Thor is wearing a full wedding dress (with bridal head-dress) because it is from a scene of the "Theft of Mjollnir" tale. This is the moment when Thor recovers his hammer and tears his disguise revealing his true identity to Thrymr, the King of Giants. After that he gladly proceed to smash Thrymr's skull. And after that he killed Thrymr's sister. Oh, and he also destroyed Thrymr's soldiers. In fact, he killed everyone attending the wedding...

Odin - with his pair of ravens Huginn and Munnin - disguised as the "Wanderer" with long beard, hat and staff. I made the staff to look more like Odin's spear - Gungnir - and since Odin is related to the writing form (he discovered the runes) I thought it would be interesting to make the spear tip to look like a pointed nib.

Loki was... well... the trickiest to portrait. He has an interesting scarred lips (Loki had his lips stitched up once). Since he is an "outsider", always creating problems and provoking the other asgardian gods, I choose to put him in those strange clothes and in a totally non-dynamic pose (if compared with Odin and Thor). And the gesture of lifting his tunic and pissing on the floor, as if he's trying to ruin the "picture". He is a trickster, after all. Here you can see the "censored" version :0)

See ya!

voltron poster

the guy that i created the green lantern corps, silverhawks,
iron man corps and optimus prime commissions for (among others) asked me to cook up my biggest most detailed piece ever for him. the subject matter?: voltron. measuring a whopping 28" x 56", and taking the better part of 6 weeks to complete, i think this fit the bill.

it was a happy day when the final mounted and laminated print arrived
safely at his house. cheers, UPS!

The Clipper Ship "Sea Witch"

A commission from a fellow ship lover. One of the more challenging pieces I've done. 11" X 14" Acrylic on panel.

Ghost Vines

Above was my mixed-media piece for the "Trick-Art-Treat" show (better late than never) entitled "Ghost Vines." Hope the turn out was good, sorry I couldn't make either one Joe!

Neil Numberman

i just wanted to take a quick second to post about another Autumn Society member, Mr Neil Numberman, who i was lucky enough to see read his brand new (and first) picture book at Books Of Wonder in NYC. I have to tell you, bias completely aside, it is REALLY great. for anyone who is still reeling from the sugar/adrenaline rush of the Halloween season, i highly recommend you check this out. if you have nieces or nephews or kids, this is one of those super fun read-alongs, and despite the breakneck speed, there is SO much to enjoy visually (especially the humor that is shown in cartoon format) that i was surprised how much i enjoyed it even more on multiple flip throughs

that being said, i also checked out his other book, Joey Fly Private Eye, written by Aaron Reynolds.

i think everyone has an early time in their youth when something amazing and influential passed through their young hands, and you can almost barely remember it. maybe it was an obscure cartoon, or a particular children's book, or a very specific graphic novel (like Tintin or this peculiar "King Smurf" comic i once had). Joey Fly is a 96 page graphic novel that pretty much puts me at that age again, discovering something strange and awesome at just the perfect time. i am surprised at how laugh out loud funny it is, and there is tons to look at here, especially the backgrounds, that crack me up.

could be a great gift for the youngins this holiday season, but i dread to admit that i frankly have copies for myself now. consider me a fan

here's to fall and winter!

my favorite times of year are here, and this was done with my main love - pencil and watercolor - since i have been doing too much work with pencil and the computer lately

feel free to click for a larger view (but y'all surely knew that by now)

It's the silliest party of the year...

ArtMares Show

This weekend was the closing reception and party for the Halloween themed ArtMares show in my hometown of Charleston, WV. The show was a great success, which is particularly important because it was the first exhibition ever put on by East End Main Street, an organization aimed at revitalizing the local community, including the art scene. I thought they did an amazing job period, not to mention for their first attempt!

The photo above is of my pieces on display, all of which have been posted here previously. I urge you to check out my blog post about the show for more photos of my favorite pieces by other artists, as I didn't want to flood this post with images.

Animated Gifs the Future of Illustration?

Is the future of illustration in Animated Gif's in the markets of Advertising and Editorial's new mediums of E-Paper/E-Ink, and The Kindle?

I think it's a matter of time before illustrators will start to discuss the pricing and ethical use of Animated Gif's made by illustrators. Who knows when illustrators will start getting jobs to animate things. For animated E-Ink Wine bottle labels, E-Ink Advertisements on the sides of bus's, Animated Illustrations for publication on Kindles.....

Above is a piece I did for school to slowly start getting a grasp of the medium to prepare for this shift.

my childhood home

Here's a new piece I just completed, for a solo show I have coming up with Trickgo. This is a portrait of the house I grew up in, in East Falls. The type and everything else is painted in acrylic. (on canvas). I lived in this house until I was thirteen, my parents planted all the trees and shrubs on the property from seedlings.

frankie's worst nightmare

frankie's worst nightmare, 11"x14", acrylic/spraypaint

here's my contribution to the trick-art-treat show! last year, i went to a wedding on halloween where a group of us decided to be the universal monsters, but all dressed in formal attire for the special occasion. my halloween painting this year is of my boyfriend and i in our costumes last year. i love the way it came out, especially because the background is matte and the figures are more glossy. if any of you go and see it in person, i hope you notice the contrast as much as i do!

check out my blog to see our group's costumes that inspired my painting! happy halloween!

This personal piece has been in the works for quite some time. It's an idea I've had for a while that I kept managing to put on the back burner in order to meet some deadlines. Needless to say, it turned out exactly how I envisioned it from the first thought. I love when that happens.

Two Factories

I recently had two factory themed illustrations published and I thought I would share them. Here's my newest illustration for The Indypendent, it's for an article about gas companies sending pollution into the ground and polluting the water source.

Here's another piece I did for WIN Magazine about corporations and their effect on prisons.

I did the illustrations about 2 weeks apart from each other, and both art directors chose the sketches with similar solutions, which is kind of cool I guess. I didn't even realize they were so similar until I posted the newest one on my blog. I had one sketch with a bird in it that I liked for the prison illustration, but they never pick my bird sketches.

Hey Everyone... So here are some sucky pics of my "Trick Art Treat" entry. I wanted to do something that was a little unexpected, and a little less "cute" than I might normally attempt. It gave me the creeps all day :/ I really need to stop being lazy and set the date on my camera.

Lil' G custom boombox contest

This was my submission for the Lil G custom boombox contest over at SpankyStokes.com. The Lil' G is a vinyl boombox shaped mp3 player. It's set to be released next year, but the creator made a few resin models. The minute I saw this I got the idea to make it into an AT-AT from Empire Strikes Back. Since it's not out yet, I haven't had a chance to make it a reality, but I got to play w/ the template in Illustrator. I also got a chance to play a little bit with Live Trace, which went very well. Here's what a blank Lil' G would look like.

Endless Canvas

I just had the honor of doing the banner for Endless Canvas. They are based out of the Bay area(Oakland, Berkely and San Francisco).

A fall drawing just for fun. The pose and theme were in my head for a while, and I decided to use Oly, one of my original characters. I also drew inspiration from some hippie girls I saw at an environmental rally earlier this week.

FANKEE!?!

I was born in Detroit, and in being so I am a Tigers fan...
I was bummed at the way they mishandled their season, and the extra innings defeat they handed to the Twins.
I live in New York, and if I had to root for one of the teams here it would be THE METS...
So, After a some troubling news from MLB this weekend I've gotta sum up my feelings in two words....

Werewolf's Halloween Night Gallery Piece

Yay! Halloween is almost here! I'm very excited for the holiday and I've been smitten by the spirit of it. Werewolves have always been my favorite classic monster and I always loved the idea of monsters trick-or-treating with us norms. :>

This is my piece for the "Trick-Art-Treat" gallery event.

Trick Art Treat art pieces

This is a piece I did for the Trick Art Treat art show. I find dogs in Halloween costumes hilarious, so I montaged a photo of a dog in a devil costume with a photo of my girlfriend's Boston terrier, Lelo. As with all of my other pieces, it was drawn out in Illustrator, then cut into stencils and spraypainted on a canvas.
I cut out a stencil of Boris Karloff as Frankenstein for the b/w flyer for the show, so I figured I would make it into a simple stencil piece for the show as well.

Part of a Balanced Breakfast

I created this piece both as something fun to do and as a second entry for a Halloween themed show called ArtMares that I'm participating in back in my home town of Charleston, WV. I feel like the cereal monsters are a fairly common subject among artists who do pop culture type stuff, but I figured I would give it a shot and ended up having a lot of fun in the process.

I really wish I could enter this as well as my other piece in the Trick Art Treat show, but I just don't think I'd be able to get them to Philly in time. I guess I'll have to be content with one Halloween show this year, and I greatly look forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with!

It's a SMod World after all...

This is my contribution for Gallery1988's group show of art inspired by Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier's podcast.

If you are in the LA area on Friday night you should try and check it out, it should be a really great show and Kevin and Scott will both be in attendance, sadly i am on the East coast and can not make it. Read the press release below to learn more...

-------

The Gallery1988: LA crew has been looking forward to this week all year! Friday night, our gallery will play host to "SMart: Artwork Inspired By Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier's SModcast." If you don't know about SModcast, no worries, because just like with everything I know nothing about....I can teach you....through Wikipedia.

-------
SModcast is a weekly podcast featuring filmmaker Kevin Smith and his long time producer partner Scott Mosier, although guests occasionally feature. Released each Sunday night, the episodes are generally one hour in length and feature Smith and Mosier discussing current events and other non-sequitur topics. The name was derived from taking the first letters of "Smith" and "Mosier" and replacing the "P" in "Podcast". The podcast is distributed through Smith's entertainment website Quick Stop Entertainment. New episodes are made available for download there each Sunday night or Monday morning, and are then released through the RSS feed the following Friday in order to ease bandwidth strains on the Quickstop Entertainment.
-------

And they've been doing it quite some time, as they are currently about to release episode #96. And this is not your father's podcast (cause your Dad LOVES podcasts). These are dirty, real, free and tremendously funny. Topics like how long it would take for Kevin to eventually make a sexual advance on Scott if they were stuck on the LOST island, how people would react if Jesus came back to fight Osama Bin Laden, what Hitler's dog was probably like and how one might confront a member of 80's rock band Foreigner if you were to see him at the supermarket are brought up on the program with extreme delight. And Titan Publishing just released "Shootin' the Sh*t with Kevin Smith: The Best Of SModcast," which takes some of the show's best bits and transcribes them into the written word. So to celebrate the book release and Kevin's Q & A event at the Orpheum Saturday night, we enlisted 25 artists to take these transcribed SMod moments and turn them into original paintings and prints for display and purchase. "SMart," hosted by Kevin and Scott, is a one-night event at G1988: LA, this Friday, Oct. 23rd from 7-11 PM and has spawned some amazing pieces. And we're excited to see the SMod-inspired pieces from:

Tom Whalen
Daniel Elson
Scott Campbell
Andrew Wilson
Allison Reimold
Dave MacDowell
Jim Horwat
Israel Sanchez
David Eichenberger
Lesley Reppeteaux
Kiersten Essenpreis
Danielle Rizzolo
Ben Walker
Joey Spiotto
NC Winters
Roland Tamayo
Scott Derby
Tom Haubrick
Dan Santat
Misha
Sean Clarity
Gideon Boomer
and 3 lucky submission winners...
Travis Kotzebue
Jen Brazas
& Razzah Wunderbar!

And one more artist Dave Perillo, who's contribution below is a depiction of SModcast episode #38, where Kevin and Scott talk about getting VERY drunk and attempting to ride It's A Small World at Disneyland (and running into some problems because of Kevin's weight).

Building Bridges

Building Bridges, 13.5x16.75, colored pencil/digital

Hey Autumn peoples. The above is a promo piece I did recently. I'm trying to update my portfolio with pieces that are illustrations of common editorial themes, and this one is about "building bridges." I tried to expand on my normal vocab and went with a turn of the century Japanese setting, rather than the more typical man-in-suit. I like it overall, so here's hoping the other pieces go well, uh, as well. Would love to know what you think.

Here's some details. One of the interesting things I found was the 2nd detail shot is like a little piece inside the illustration. Neato, eh?
